The Kripalu tradition emphasizes slowing down and connecting movement with breath to awaken and unite energy in the body, mind, and spirit. Honoring each individual’s body and limits, modifications to postures and stretches are integrated to create safety and strengthening. This Sunday evening practice will be a gentle, supportive, and grounding way to prepare for the week ahead and shed any of “yesterday’s” baggage. Each class begins with a centering, and then gradually moves into gentle warm-ups that stretch and prepare the entire body for yoga postures (asanas) and the deeper stretching that follows. Class will close with a deep relaxation (savasana) to restore the body’s energy and absorb the benefits of the practice. Students of all fitness levels and experience are welcome.

ABOUT THE YOGA

ABOUT CAROL
Carol Nelson has been captivated by the magic of yoga since 1976 when she first met and studied with Mr. B.K.S. Iyengar. Her 30+ years’ journey has taken her around the world studying and teaching. She founded one of Boston’s first yoga centers in 1977, the Creative Yoga Studio. “Creative” describes her method, an approach that embodies the simplicity and serenity of yoga.
You can read about her in Dan Wakefield’s book How Do We Know When It’s God? (Little, Brown, Co.) and Roanne Weisman’s book Own Your Health (Health Connections.) She is a featured model in two books publish by Rodmell Press; Back Care Basics by Dr. Mary Pullig Schatz and Relax and Renew by Judith Lasater PhD., P.T. and contributed the yoga section to Margit Esser Porter’s book Hope Lives (h.ic. publishing.)
Carol continues to teach at the Shambhala Meditation Center of Boston, The Arlington Center, and The Majestic Yoga Studio. She is yoga teacher in residence at Window’s to Sea on Martha’s Vineyard, offering private sessions, small group classes and weekend workshops with internationally known guest teachers.

Hara is a Japanese word that refers to the practice of discovering the root of one’s “deeper possibility and power.” Hara can be translated as “belly” but it is much more than that. Hara is also the process of discovering one’s center, both physical and psychological; a strong and awake core in the body as well as a more stable mind; allowing one to live life with greater joy and confidence. In this slow-flow, Hatha yoga class, we will investigate Hara in every sense through an approach to postures and breathing exercises that will help students experience a strong, stable but not rigid center.
