Sarah Hillenbrand

Alignment-based Hatha Yoga teacher known for classes that progressively build toward a fun and challenging apex pose. Each class ties into the bigger picture of how to be a happy and thoughtful human being in this world; yoga is about awareness and cultivating the skill of (accurate and kind) self-reflection.

Each month my classes focus on transformation by exploring a group of poses that engender a certain energetic effect or by gradually building towards a pose that embodies growth and expansion beyond perceived capabilities. My belief is that with consistent practice of solid alignment principles and actions you can experience change. Injuries are regarded as messengers; they herald the exact path you need to take next to expand the foundation of your entire practice. You are invited to use the classroom as a laboratory for experimenting with new configurations in how you react to the state of your life. The physical poses are donned like costumes and then embodied through the breath and power of your imagination so that you may be the Warrior, the Child, the Bridge or the Tree.

In my classes you can expect consistent, progressive alignment cues that build to a logical apex. To that end I use demonstration, partner work, anatomical explanations and story-telling. Each class is symbolically, physically and spiritually cohesive.

In addition to teaching group classes, I specialize in working with students who have scoliosis and mothers, both pregnant and postpartum. Privates and semi-privates are available in-studio or at your home.

(Alignment refers to positioning your body in an efficient, safe and powerful way so that you work with gravity and the way your body was designed to move.)

Baby & Mama Yoga
Updated: 02-22-2010
Baby & Mama Yoga classes provide an opportunity for you to regain strength and flexibility, bond with baby and meet other Moms. (And to practice getting out of the house!). The focus of the class is on poses and breathwork specifically tailored for new moms. Special attention is placed on developing Mom’s core strength and stability: the abdomen, back and pelvic floor, as well as relieving tension in the neck, shoulders and back. Previous yoga experience is not necessary; women who have practiced yoga before will find these classes a great transition back to their pre-pregnancy practice. Babies aged 6 weeks up to new walkers are welcome. Moms are invited first to meet the needs of Baby, then to participate in class; breastfeeding and diaper-changing are welcome!

Yoga & Scoliosis
Updated: 04-09-2010
Gabriel Halpern is the teacher of this class. I apprentice weekly there (along with many other teachers) and work exclusively with students who have scoliosis. Every pose is a supported pose utilizing props, and is held for several minutes. The goal is first to remove or reduce pain, next is correction. Each student has a personalized sequence that is overseen and supplemented by Gabriel's vast experience and wisdom.

Yoga BASICS
Updated: 03-14-2010
A thorough and complete introduction to yoga, perfect for absolute beginners, those returning to yoga after an extended absence, or those looking to fill in the "gaps" in their yoga education. Each class is a fun, group effort to discover our habits, whether they are physical, emotional or mental. Poses are selected that sequentially reveal areas of tightness and openess. Partner work helps you learn by seeing changes in other's bodies, so that you can better feel them in your own.

Yoga & Scoliosis GROUP Class
Updated: 04-09-2010
The only one of its kind on the North Shore, this class is specifically for students who have scoliosis. Each class will work on a specific task related to broadening your awareness and applying that knowledge to asana. All Poses will be modified to activate the weaker muscles of your back and core. Each class builds on the previous class so clear progress will be seen and felt. This group class is limited to ten people for maximum individualized attention. This class is offered in 6 week sessions and pre-registration is REQUIRED. Call the studio or email me for details.

Prenatal Yoga
Updated: 02-22-2010
One hour of poses designed to help you feel strong, powerful, open and prepared for pregnancy and birth. 15 minutes of restorative (deeply relaxing, supported) poses, pranayama (breath work), comfort measures for labor and birth, or sharing our unique stories as emerging and developing mothers. While accessible and adaptable to all stages of pregnancy, this class is more physically challenging than the typical prenatal class. Ideal for Moms with a regular yoga practice looking for pose modifications and a sense of community. Safety of Mom and Baby is the first priority.
